Moss and lichen can grow on roofs.  But, unlike black algae stains, they can be much more destructive to your expensive asphalt shingle roof.  For this reason, it is important to address the problem before it becomes too advanced.  Moss and lichen both have root-like structures that embed themselves into the shingle substrate, absorbing nutrients out of the shingles.  They are feeding on your shingles.  Moss, which most people recognize by its green clumpy or blanketing formations is most damaging due to it's tendency to absorb moisture and hold it like a sponge.  Constant moisture on a roof can cause rotting and premature failure of the shingles and plywood beneath.  This is why that is critical to have roof moss removed from shingles as soon as you notice it.  Contact us today for the areas most trusted shingle moss removal service.

ROOF MOSS REMOVAL

For roof moss removal, we start by manually removing as much moss from the shingles as possible.  Small, clumpy pieces of moss are generally easy to remove, while flat, carpet-like moss is usually heavily attached and more difficult to remove.  Next, we treat the entire roof along with any remaining moss fragments.  This step ensures that all moss and algae are dead and will not continue to grow.  The final step, if it is determined that it will be effective, is to remove the remaining, dead moss from the shingles using water from a garden hose and a jet nozzle. In most cases, this step will remove most if not all of any remaining moss.

ROOF LICHEN REMOVAL

Lichen is more destructive to asphalt shingles than moss and should be removed as soon as its spotted. To remove lichen from a shingle roof, it is first sprayed with a solution to kill the fungus and stop any continued growth.  If possible, we will remove the dead material using a water from a jet nozzle on a garden hose.  Again, this step is perfectly safe and will not remove the protective granules from the shingles like a pressure washer.  We are usually able to remove 80-95% of the lichen at the time of the cleaning.  Any remaining lichen material may take several months to dry out and wash away with the rain.

 QUESTIONS

  • Why does moss grow on my roof?

Moss usually grows on asphalt shingle roofs only after algae has been present for some time.  Moss generally thrives where surfaces stay moist and relatively shaded and cool.

  • What can I do to keep moss from growing on my roof?

The best way to keep moss from growing on your roof is to keep it clean from algae.  After an initial roof cleaning, it is a good idea to inspect your roof after about 3 to 4 years to see if any black algae stains are beginning to reappear.  Also, if moss tends to grow under tree branches that overhang your roof, you should cut back branches or limbs as far as possible to give those areas of the roof as much light as you can.
